Electrical Line Clearing
Wednesday 5th June 2024
Hey there, everyone! Wondering where we've been lately? Well, our dedicated team has been hard at work conducting our annual Electrical Line Clearance works for Moira Shire Council.
With a whopping 3100 trees already cut this season, our fully qualified and insured staff have been busy ensuring that the High Bushfire Rated Area (HBRA) is clear and ready before the season is declared. Safety is our top priority, and by clearing the vegetation around electrical lines, we are reducing the risk of potential hazards and ensuring uninterrupted power supply for our communities.
Speaking of safety, it's essential to keep an eye on the service wire running to your house. If you notice any branches or leaves obstructing the wire, don't hesitate to give us a call! Our team is equipped and ready to clear any potential obstructions, ensuring a smooth and reliable flow of electricity to your home.
Remember, maintaining a clear path for the service wire not only enhances safety but also helps prevent potential power outages and other electrical issues. So, let's work together to keep our homes and neighborhoods safe and powered up!
If you have any concerns or need assistance with clearing the service wire, don't hesitate to reach out to us. Our team is here to help and ensure that your electrical connections are in top-notch condition.
Our team is highly experienced in local Electrical Line Clearance Programs and we have been serving the North East for over 30 years. We have been trusted contractors for various local Councils and we follow strict policies and procedures set out by regulatory bodies such as SpAusnet, Powercor, Energy Safe Victoria, and WorkSafe.
Our operators are minimum Level 3 Qualified Arborists and undergo annual refresher courses for the Electrical Supply Industry. They must adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Code and the Electricity Safety (General) Regulations 2019, Country Fire Authority Act 1958, Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, Council's Tree Management Plan, Council's Electric Line Clearance Management Plan, and Australian Standard 4373 Pruning of Amenity Trees.
We prioritise safety and follow the recommended practices for pruning trees, ensuring clean cuts to the branch collar or branch bark ridge. Lopping and flush-cutting are not acceptable practices. Our operators also consider the type of powerline, its material, voltage, location, and length when cutting trees to maintain a safe clearance.
The minimum vegetation clearance distance for low voltage powerlines varies depending on the bushfire risk area, ranging from 1m to 1.5m plus allowance for powerline movement. Additional pruning is necessary to account for vegetation regrowth, which depends on various factors such as vegetation type, environmental conditions, and cutting cycle frequency.
Our trained, qualified, and insured staff adhere to Australian Standards, Industry Standards, State Legislation, and Local Council Management Plans. We prioritise community safety while maintaining the aesthetic appeal of trees and ensuring uninterrupted power supply.
Stay tuned for more updates on our Electrical Line Clearance works, and let's keep our communities safe and powered up!

Service Wires
Did you know that it is the homeowner's responsibility to clear their trees from the service wire on their property?
The service wire is the wire that runs from a pole to your house, usually attached to your building's fascia. It is crucial to maintain a minimum clearance of 30cm all the way around the wire to ensure safety.
Clearing trees from the service wire is a task that should only be performed by trained and authorized individuals, such as SpAusnet employees or contractors like our dedicated team.
Here's why it's important to leave this task to the professionals:
1️⃣ Safety: Working near electrical wires can be dangerous, especially if you are not trained in proper safety procedures. Trained professionals have the knowledge and expertise to safely clear trees from the service wire without risking injury or electrical hazards.
2️⃣ Compliance: Electrical regulations and standards must be followed when working near service wires. Trained and authorized individuals are familiar with these regulations and can ensure that the work is done in compliance with all necessary requirements.
3️⃣ Expertise: Professionals who specialize in electrical line clearing have the experience and skills to perform the task efficiently and effectively. They understand the potential risks and challenges involved and can handle them with expertise.
By entrusting the task of clearing trees from the service wire to trained and authorised professionals, you can ensure the safety of your property and the surrounding area.

Distribution Company Fined
Powercor Australia fined $2.1 million for electricity safety breaches!
On Wednesday 8 May 2024, Powercor faced the consequences of failing to meet their responsibilities under the Electricity Safety Act 1998. The company was fined a record-breaking $2.1 million in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court for a staggering 104 charges.
These charges were related to Powercor's neglect in inspecting and trimming vegetation growing under its powerlines, as well as their failure to mitigate bushfire risk by cutting back vegetation that was too close to power lines.

Innovation: Use of Hedgers
Did you know that using hedge trimmers for vegetation management around overhead powerlines can have several benefits?
Traditionally, target pruning and branch removal have been the go-to methods for maintaining clearance around powerlines. However, a few years ago, an employee suggested using hedge trimmers instead, and the results have been impressive.
Here's why using hedge trimmers can be a game-changer in vegetation management:
1️⃣ Shaping and Sculpting: Instead of removing entire branches, hedge trimmers allow for shaping and sculpting the tree. By reducing growth to inter-node growth points, the tree maintains a more natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
2️⃣ Improved Tree Health: Hedging promotes better leaf cover during the summer months, providing shade and reducing stress on the tree. This can help prevent sun scald on the scaffolds and overall improve the tree's health and vitality.
3️⃣ Reduced Regrowth: The use of hedge trimmers has shown to slow down the regrowth rate of trees. By consistently shaping and maintaining the tree's growth, the need for frequent pruning may be reduced.
4️⃣ Cost and Time Efficiency: Hedging can be a more efficient method compared to target pruning, as it requires less time and effort. This can result in cost savings and increased productivity for vegetation management teams.
It's important to note that while hedging can be effective, there may come a point where regrowth becomes too thick for the hedge trimmers. In such cases, reverting back to target pruning for a season can help manage the tree's growth effectively.
By embracing innovative approaches like hedging, we can achieve better-looking trees, improved tree health, and more efficient vegetation management around overhead powerlines.
